I stayed in this hotel with my wife and kid on may 2011, Price was just right, Once I saw the hotel from outside and enter the lobby, I definitely felt that i was living in the early 1900s or the late 1800s but this time "In full HD" and "colored". the room was really big! it's around 70-80 square meters. Old wooden creeky floor, big doors. Charlie Chaplin and some other famous people had stayed in this hotel although it wasn't called astor that time. My child said it was creepy though we had a great experience. note:beware of taxi drivers who would drive you circles.
A good value-for-money hotel in a great location. While rooms are large and the 'original' floor boards have been retained, it is time for the floors to be upgraded (for health and safety) and some furniture should be replaced. Staff assistance in the main lobby area was very good. Room service was not so good. A good range of food was provided at breakfast but the 'hot' food was often too cold to enjoy. Other food areas for lunch/dinner etc were very disappointing.

If you want to stay in a hotel with a huge amount of history the Astor House is perfect. It is an amazing building and rooms have been renovated but have kept their old world character. I stayed in the Executive Rooms which are a bit more expensive but a very good size. The only downside would be that if you are worried about noise you can hear the people on the floor above moving around as the hotel has wooden floors. Also there wasn't wifi in the room, had to go into the executive lounge to use it which was a bit of a pain. The location is ideal, being just across the creek from the Bund. While the rooms have been renovated they still seemed a bit grubby, but probably no worse than most hotels. I would recommend staying at the Astor House.
It's an historic building age 160 years !!. The corridor is smelly but the rooms are all clean. bathroom is nice n modern. It is an old English hotel but didn't serve English afternoon tea or breakfast. Location is superb as it's right next to Bund and near Nanking Road.
Overpriced for quality offered. TV sound from next door room a problem - walls must be thin or TV loud. Creaky, and a bit awkward. Location the key.
Great location at north side of the Waibaidu Bridge, north end of the bund. the lift to go to the rooms is on a level about about 10 steps up from the foyer level. the stair steps had no handrails so my elderly mum could not leave the hotel or go to breakfast without help up or down these stairs. the hotel had run out of key cards so we could only get one key to share between us; the desk staff thought it was very funny. the breakfast room was grand and the food was varied and plentifull. the room was spacious and the bathroom was recently renovated.
no concierge when we checked in, and the woman processing our arrival was most unhelpful internet access was expensive - not value for money also room allocated was very noisy (above Astor bar) and altnernate room was only accessible by multiple flights of stairs on the good side, when they served us bad ham for breakfast, they halved the bill
Beautiful hotel with generous well-priced rooms. Staff very helpful and good location. Hard to beat in Shanghai for value for money
Good value for money hotel. I paid the extra for the Executive Room which I was happy with. Staff are helpful though English can be a problem but after all you are visiting a foreign country. The bar is in big need of an update as is the coffee shop. Not much around the hotel, a few local restaurants which are OK. Taxis are cheap so you can get anywhere easily. When the construction ends for World Expo the hotel location will be excellent for the Bund and the sites of Pudong. Nanjing Road is a A$3 taxi trip.
They asked if we wanted an upgrade which is going to cost 2500 RMB at check-in which we declined. We are giving a room on 6th floor with a very small window and unble to look out of the window. We request a room with windows and able to open up for fresh air. There was no problem in changing room. This time we are giving a room on the 4th floor, an very large older room with 3 large windows and looking toward the Bund and the bridge which light up at night. The only problem is very noisy with traffic both day and night. We are happy to put up with the noise. Overall happy with the location and service but We don't think the sheets had been changed for the 8 days that we stay and the non-slip bath mat in the shower appears mouldy and dirty.
nice hotel but all the road works around it makes it a hassle to get to
It was an excelllent hotel overall with a lot of history. The location was very good except when we were staying there, there were a lot of construction work going on in all surrounding areas for the Shanghai Expo. The room was very spacious and clean and with free internet access and flat screen computer. The buffet breakfast was exceptional (included when staying at excetive room). The only downside was the service of the bellboy who seemed very keen on getting his tips for carrying the luggage to the 2nd floor room, even when we had no local currency to offer. Not a good indication of real service.
During the time we stayed, there was major construction going on so there was no simple/footpath access in the area or to major sites, including the Bund. While well located, close to the Bund, there are very few if any restaurants in the area.
The top floor room I booked had 3 windows, all giving views of various parts of the roof.
Cute men in kilts were very courteous and helpful. Fabulous location with easy stroll to shops and tourist spots around the Bund. Room was very big with great views from window of river and spectacular skyline. Very enjoyable stay. Wish it was longer.
Large rooms, with a good location on the river.
An excellent hotel which I would thoroughly recommend. Lots of character, good value for money and within easy walking distance from the Bund. Staff friendly and helpful. Wonderful.
Absolutely super hotel. Thoroughly recommend. Lots of character and within easy walking distance from the Bund. Staff very helpful and friendly. Price excellent value.
The Astor House is a must for a stay in Shanghai. It has history, character, charm and excellent rooms. Billed as the most luxurious hotel in the Orient when it was built in the 19th century (every bedroom had its own bathroom) it has been completely refurbished but without loosing its historic features such as spacious rooms with timber floors and stained glass windows in the stairwells. It has a lift but there are about 4 or 5 steps to get to the lift lobby. The dining room has an excellent Chinese menu but be prepared to dine early, I arrived at 8.30 p.m. to find it closing up. The English breakfast in the coffee shop is a curiosity, ham & eggs and a 'side salad'! The staff do not speak much English. It's location near the Bund is excellent. It may be hard for an airport taxi driver to find so make sure you get the name written in Chinese characters by someone at the airport. Allow lots of time to get a taxi back to the airport, Shanghai's traffic is awful. I'd stay here again.
Hotel was in a great location. Easy to get to the Bund and close to the ferry to cross to Pudong. Handy for the Nanjing Road shopping areas. Breakfast was top class. I understand some of the rooms are being renovated. Best get one of the executive rooms until the renovations are completed. Exec room was top class. Staff very helpful and friendly. Would definately stay here again.
