Avalon Grand Hotel Cancun

Attractive hotel. The staff at the front desk were very helpful in answering questions about which bus to take to get to downtown Cancun, how to use the bus system to go to the airport, bus vs taxi prices to the airport, and where to find a local internet cafe. I'm learning Spanish and enjoyed talking to the staff in Spanish. I appreciated their patience with my errors. The week I spent at the hotel (12/3 through 12/9/11) a number of cold fronts came through that made the ocean turbulent, so the red "no swimming" flag was displayed most every day. The last morning I was there, the red flag was still flying so I decided to wade out into the sea a short distance, sit down, and hold onto to the rope at the edge of the hotel's property while the waves broke over me. Not quite as good as swimming, but still fun. I never tried the hotel's pool, but everyday as I walked by it to spend some time on the beach it always looked very clean. I don't believe the hotel has elevators. I traveled with just one bag, and climbing the stairs wasn't a problem. For those with more luggage, there were bellboys eager to give a hand, for a fee I would expect. My room was cleaned everyday, and always looked nice when I came back in the evening from the meeting I was attending.

Good hotel, friendly staff, wonderful location, beautiful seaview. Only negative is, it rained when we stayed and water seeped through windows. We/Hotel staff then put towels to prevent water from spreading. Also due humidity, floors which are not carpetted remained wet most of the time and that was very uncomfortable.

The hotel has almost no beach left after the Wilma hurricane!!!!!! It was very dissapointing to see that we only have a couple of feet of sand :(
