Ten minutes' drive from Chiang Mai International Airport, in the well-trodden hills of northern Thailand, Baan Saen Doi (House of a Hundred Thousand Hills) has somehow eluded the platinum-card-carrying class. Featuring classic Lanna architecture without, and authentic hill-tribe craftsmanship within, this two-year-old hidden gem comprises just seven suites and four rooms, making it feel less like a hotel and more like the sumptuous home of its Thai owner Wanphen Sakdatorn and her husband, German Honorary Consul Hagen Dirksen. Tennis courts, a spa, private balconies (taking in palm-fringed mountain views), bathtubs built for two and butler service make for a memorable guest experience, as does Saen Kham Terrace—the stunning art gallery cum restaurant next door. Dishes like shiitake mushrooms in salty lime sauce, and Burmese pork curry, hold their own against the gallery's modern art and ancient artifacts, attracting both fashionable Thais and awed but underdressed tourists. Discover this stylish sanctuary, nestled beneath the sacred peak of Doi Suthep, before more of the latter do.

Baan Saen Doi Chiang Mai Guest Reviews

4.2 out of 5

Loved the hotel. Design, quality of construction, attention to detail, room, and service were all excelent. We did not use the spa, restaurant or pool so no comment on these ammenties other than the pool is a short walk down the street in a seperate building, which was not that appealing. For us the location far from the center of the city and in an upscale neighborhood with no restaurants, bars, shops, or people, was not ideal. We enjoy being able to walk out the door and start interacting with the culture of the country/city we have come to visit. One negative for us was having to make a reservation for breakfast. The less scheduled events on a vacation the better. A positive was that my watch was 'misplaced' in the room and when management was informed, every effort was made to find it and forward it on to me in my next location. During our visit to Thailand we stayed in 6 high end hotels and found the room and design here of a much higher standard than any of the others.

absolute luxury - we were the first to stay in the room (Nov 06) as this new building had just been opened. There are only 8 rooms in the building we were in (its inside a gated community with a communal pool). excellent resturant beside the pool that was surprisingly cheap. We were allocated our own dining room and 2 chefs looked after you. Staff were excellent especially Aoi. Couldnt have wished for more! Only slight drawback is that its a little bit out of town and we most of the taxi drivers got lost trying to take us back at night - make sure you have the hotel address written in Thai with the phone number and they will get you there eventually! (all part of the fun!) M
