Botanico Hotel Lisbon

"The hotel is everything other reviewers say: helpful staff, excellent breakfast, spotlessly clean. It's location is a problem, though. The hill is not - come on folks, a 5 minute walk up a slope is not a big deal (I am in my 50's, not fit, and yet did it with ease). The problem is the surroundings. There are homeless people and drunks who sleep in the park you have to walk past to get to the hotel. The streets are filthy. I did not feel safe walking alone in the evening in this area. "I really enjoyed my stay here. The rooms were very clean and adequate, the breakfast was excellent, and the staff are extremely helpful if you ask them; if you have a problem and tell them about it (everyone speaks fairly good English), they will fix it with a smile. It's about a 7-minute walk to the main squares at Rossio and Praca da Figueira where you can pick up the trolleys/buses and everything else, and there are metro stops within 3 minutes of the hotel. I imagine this hotel is quieter than some of the ones on the main squares, since it's up a side street; ask for a room in the rear of the hotel high up for max quietness, as sometimes cars honk when there is a holdup, and I did hear dogs barking sometimes. If you get a single, some of the rooms have an extremely small shower, ie not really big enough to shave your legs in, but they do have larger singles that they will switch you to if they have them available. If I come back to Lisbon, I will definitely stay here. " - Kathy Cooke
