We had the deluxe balcony room and I highly recommend paying the extra for the upgraded room. The room was huge and beautifully decorated with a enclosed hardwood porch with laquer table and furniture. We had exquisite service with immediate attention to any request from ice for the room to an extra 110 adapter. The pool, sauna and exercise facility was top notch. The hotel complex is large with all grades of rooms. The breakfast was about 100 yuan and included American foods as well as Chinese. The made-to-order omelttes rivaled Embassy Suite and the croissants were great.
The main thing I didn't like about the deal is that it doesn't come with breakfast even when I'd paid for the 800rmb per night version. Not terribly fair I think. So most mornings I would walk across to Wagas, a cool little cafe serving good coffee and cool western cafe food to surf and eat. It's most convenient this way doing business meetings over cappuccino and crossaint. Too much Chinese food can wreck your belly.

My 2nd stay at the Donghu Hotel, large room facing garden, fast and reliable internet, great location, heaps of bars returants and coffee shops in the street. Front desk girl is not the happiest creture on the face of the earth but gets the job done without issues. Good value for money, we are booked to go back in a few days.
A great place for the price - I rented a suite for the price of a room in one of the hotel chains - Internet worked, room clean and lots of space - I will come back.
No Gym dispite it being a listed inclusion. .Room very tired and it would have been more comfortable sleeping on the floor than the mattress. Unable to upgrade even though the hotel was not full.
Very nice hotel in the "French" quarters. Quiet and calm surroundings (for Shanghai..). I recomend this hotel!
I booked two rooms one for my son and one for me. Both rooms were never cleaned, toilet papers not replenished, mini bar not replenished and sheets not changed for 5 nights while we were there. The only thing they cleaned is the sink and toilet! The bathroom has a leaky shower and mildew in the grouting. The exterior hotel is great, service by the reception is good but the housekeeping is shabby! This hotel needs a total refurbishment to bring it to as good a hotel as The Mansion Hotel but then I guess we would have to pay a lot more!
recommended. make sure you ask them before you ask them for any service. They may charge you for using some service.
I'm not sure which is the main building, but I stayed at No. 70, which looks pretty new. Location wise, it's just off Huaihai Street, kind of near the Shanxi subway, but still at least a 10 minutes walk away. Along Donghu Street are good restaurants, including Wagas and Element Fresh. If you do plan to use the subway quite a bit, the Shanxi subway is on Line 1, which is 2 stops away from People's Square, the main interchange. Most of the sights are along Line 2. As for my room, it's really huge and I had one with two single beds and a small balcony looking out on the Donghu Street. If you fancy staying in a room with oriental furniture, then this is the room for you. While it was overall comfortable, the shower needed more water pressure and you could never quite get the temperature of the water just right.
Stayed 4 nights at the "Dong Hu Bing Guan". The Hotel has several buildings spanning both sides of the street. We stayed in building # 2 which ajoins the main buliding # 1 at number 70 Dong Hu Lu. The staff were courtesous and helpful and the location is excellent. Try Jenny's bar accross the street, a large Giner cat sleeps on top of the beer fridge and a large tabby cat lies along the bar, an unusual but intersting touch! Also try the Teppinyakki next door, both excellent. Only 5 minutes walk from Shanxi Nan Lu Subway station. Excellent value overall. Rooms are a little basic and old fashioned but perfectly in keeping with the setting of an old French Concession Mansion. New 32" LCD TV's and fast/stable free broadband in the rooms were appreciated. I will stay here next time and recommend to friends and family.
I have stayed at the Donghu Hotel Shanghai 3 times now and I like it alot. It is located in the old French quarters, very near a nice shopping street. Not walking distance from the bund but you can go there easy with taxi och subway (sub station very near). 5 minutes (with cab) from a good barstreet. The hotel itself is a old style French villa. I think that it is a perfect plase to stay at in Shanghai! I give it 5*****
We thought this was a great hotel to stay in, friendly and helpful staff, a minor problem with light fitting quickly and efficiently fixed, good sized rooms and fantastic area to stay in and walk round. We will be back again.
Donghu is a lovely hotel with good facilities and very helpful staff. It was great to be surrounded by gardens in the middle of such a big city. Just one problem - confusion about the deposit paid to [the website].
