Fantastic location! A hop, skp and a jump from ferry port and shell beach. The oldest hotel in New Zealand. There for New Years Eve, could not have picked a better hotel. Certainly would be back again. Fantastic!

Excellent boutique type hotel right on the foreshore. Very pleasant staff and outlook. The room was basic however. Breakfast was also included but again fairly basic - straight continental with no trimmings. However would stop there again as great value for money!
The location of this hotel was excellent, but the standard of accommodation was a little disappointing. The room was large, but there was no heating and no view, which detracted from our stay.
I stayed in this hotel many years ago as a young child with my parents. This stay was partly a trip down Memory Lane. I was curious to see what if anything I remembered about the hotel. The hotel is in a beautiful position adjacent to the Russell Pier and very close to all the amenities available.
We both enjoyed our stay at the hotel. An air extractor in the toilet and a ceiling fan in the bedroom would have been good.
The only "downs" were lack of airconditioning coupled with no opening windows and doors that opened to a common terrace. This meant that you had the choice of cooking in your room or sleeping with an open door to a public area.
The Duke of Marlborough was a wonderful hotel - the character and ambience was warm and inviting. It had so much old world charm and the location was brilliant.
The Duke is a great character hotel in a fantastic location. It is just what I was expecting. I just wish we had being staying longer.
Wonderful place to stay, great location and excellent staff. I will definalty be going back!!!
Lovely location - just right for that relaxing weekend away. We loved Russell and found rooms just right.
Super little hotel. Evening meal slightly disappointing for the price. Position is superb in lovely seaside resort. Front rooms bigger and better (and more expensive).
Charming hotel with a lot of character. It is worth paying a little bit extra and book waterfront suite - the view compensates the cost. Myself and my husband stayed there for 4 nights in Nov'07 and we loved it!
Lovely Old World charm in sympathetically renovated rooms in Idilic setting. Loved it!
Quite exceptionally pleasant staff. A1 in every way
Our group of 3 enjoyed the location of this Hotel, right on the water, we had superior room (the water front rooms overlook the bay, they looked good as well). The room was clean and well presented. The place has a bit of the old world charm (considering how long the Europeans have been settled there) Meals are in the restaurant or in the bistro (we chose the Bistro) and the breakfast included adds value to the stay. There are many restaurants in the local area to choose from, on the other night we chose The Gables down the road. (Note that the Pizza shop around the corner is closed on Mondays) There are regular passenger ferries running from the pier out the front or a vehicle ferry (about 5Kms away). This is great area to go to, allow at least 2 days (or more if you have a car) to see the surrounds and the bay of 100 islands.
Location brilliant, cleaning of rooms vg, but some aspects poor: breakfast limited variety and not always well-cooked , coffee cold, toaster very slow no internet or email access, only one chair in room. No lounge dedicated to guests, hotel seemed more interested in its restaurant than in its guests. Nowhere in room to hang long skirts or dresses.
Duke of Marlborough Hotel is a charming old world style hotel right on the beachfront in Russell, Bay of Islands. A more than adequate buffet cooked breakfast is complimentary with all stays. We ate informally one night on the terrace on the waterfront from the Bistro menu. The food was great. There are a number of other restaurants also right on the beach within two minutes walk. We chose to eat take out pizzas on the beach. We had a standard room which had an ensuite bathroom and satellite TV and a very comfortable queen sized bed with a nice view of Russell and a glimpse of the water. We will definitely go back.
Breakfast was included in tariff and was hot and cold buffet. However,7.30 was scheduled start time. Friday 24 Nov it was just about ready, Sat 25 Nov it was nearly ready by 8 am! There seemed to be a shortage of staff and no visible evidence of any management. Rooms were airy and clean and large but a bit basic - no place to put a case apart from floor! and no tissues in bathroom. Location excellent but some outside washing down & maintenance desperately needed.
Poor breakfasts.
