"The location of the Grand Oriental was great, being right on the Port of Colombo, where from the Harbour Restaurant you can watch the ships unloading at night-time. Food was quite good both here & in the downstairs restaurant. Service was very good with polite & efficient staff. Only problem I had was with the elec. plug for my hairdryer, but now I know the secret of how the plugs work, I will manage that next time. I took a driver from the hotel for a half day personal tour in Colombo & really enjoyed it, as some of the tourist attractions are quite spread out. Being a woman in my 50s on my own, I felt safer that way.
My room was a bit dark, but otherwise clean w/ comfortable beds. Most hotels I stayed in Sri Lanka were old & likewise their faciities, so lower your expectations if you are a Westerner, & accept that 3 star here will be less than you expect in a Western country.
Sri Lanka is wonderful to visit, the people very friendly, with incredible history, culture & nature." - Robyn Schuurman
"The staff and management at the GOH were courteous. The hotel was old but had all the required facilities. The buffet breakfast was excellent. Found the hotel a bit isolated and due to the high security zone, it took longer to return to the hotel at night. However, it was safe. I would recommend this hotel to those on a business trip." - Dilshad Abdulhusein
"Gorgeous - with lovely staff. Just a shame Colombo is such a difficult place to be at the moment - but if you have to stay for a night, this is a great place to do it! " - Steve Doughty
"The location is excellent to walk to Fort Station. And the view from the restaurant is very beatuful especially sunset time." - Shiho Sakata
