we were delighted with hotel and so went back a second time.#
The location of the Grand Oriental was great, being right on the Port of Colombo, where from the Harbour Restaurant you can watch the ships unloading at night-time. Food was quite good both here & in the downstairs restaurant. Service was very good with polite & efficient staff. Only problem I had was with the elec. plug for my hairdryer, but now I know the secret of how the plugs work, I will manage that next time. I took a driver from the hotel for a half day personal tour in Colombo & really enjoyed it, as some of the tourist attractions are quite spread out. Being a woman in my 50s on my own, I felt safer that way. My room was a bit dark, but otherwise clean w/ comfortable beds. Most hotels I stayed in Sri Lanka were old & likewise their faciities, so lower your expectations if you are a Westerner, & accept that 3 star here will be less than you expect in a Western country. Sri Lanka is wonderful to visit, the people very friendly, with incredible history, culture & nature.

The staff and management at the GOH were courteous. The hotel was old but had all the required facilities. The buffet breakfast was excellent. Found the hotel a bit isolated and due to the high security zone, it took longer to return to the hotel at night. However, it was safe. I would recommend this hotel to those on a business trip.
Gorgeous - with lovely staff. Just a shame Colombo is such a difficult place to be at the moment - but if you have to stay for a night, this is a great place to do it!
The location is excellent to walk to Fort Station. And the view from the restaurant is very beatuful especially sunset time.
I chose to stay in the Grand Oriental Hotel because of the associations it had with my great grandparents. The staff listened carefully to my story and took the time to take my daughter and I on a conducted tour. I found the food to be varied and well presented and the view from the restaurant at night was magical. Although there was heavy security outside the hotel because of its proximity to the harbour, I found the people to be courteous and helpful. If I go back to Colombo (which I hope to do) I will stay at the GOH again.
The hotel is quite an old establishment and still has some of the old world charm. We also found the staff friendly and helpful.
Very charming historical hotel. Reasonably well kept given the building is 150+ years old. Good central location. The people were very friendly and helpful. I would definitely stay there again.
Very friendly and helpful staff, especialy at the reception desk and the blue leopard night club. will make another visit for sure
It is near the harbour and the market; it is clean and comfortable and has very friendly and helpful staff. Highly recommended.
