"The hotel was built in the 80s and was built adjacent to the Grand View Garden which was based on the Chinese Classic " Dream of the Red Chamber". In its hay-day, this must be quite a spectacular hotel. Guests of the hotel can visit the garden free and I was surprised to know that the Garden was ranked No.40 tourist site in China.
The washroom had a funny musty odor which the hotel tried to mask by using a strong cleaning agent. The shower was a pit with water coming down just a triggle. So taking shower was not pleasant at all.
For meals -we asked the conciege, and one of the boys recommended the 9 Head Bird restaurant just about 8 min walk from the hotel. There were quite a few nice restaurant not too far including a KFC, a cigarette smoke-filled Internet Cafe, a grocery store.
The staff were quite pleasant and helpful.
