Great spot, really handy to town, great room, nice and quiet, will definitely stay here again :)
stayed overnight friday 26th nov 2010. It is very basic , but provides a clean room to sleep in - for $89 in central auckland , that is a steal ! Be aware the shared bathroom is for the entire floor ; so there could be problems during busy times ideal accommodation if you are just up for a concert or function and just spending sleeping time in the hotel I would use them again

An inexpensive friendly place well-situated in downtown Auckland. Small basic rooms but large open dining /lounge area and helpful staff.
they upgraded us as they were full. Excellent Value and were very accomodating. Suggest travellers book car parking in advance though as they have limited spots and because the location is so good, streeet parking is limited
Very clean and modern rooms and the staff were also very helpful. Right in the centre of town, five minutes walk from harbour and Queen Street.
Excellent
Friendly staff Good breakfast
I spend 3 nights in a single room (shared bathroom). I took this place for its location and its cheap price. Coming from US, I would have to say you can find a lot better hotels for ~US$50 over here, but it seems there weren't many options in Auckland for that price. Being alone, I didn't have any major problems with Aspen House, except the fact that there was no fan or AC in the room. All you get in the room is a twin bed, pillow, desk and chair, and a towel with holes in it. I like to have air circulation while I sleep, so I opened the window. The problem is that it was too cold outside and the city is a bit loud. So I ended up waking up every night to close it. The shared bathroom was ok, we lost the hot water one morning, but they fixed it up pretty fast.
My room smelled really bad and there was no safe way of leaving the windows open. In any case the smoking area was outside my window. The room lighting was poor. One duvet was not warm enough for me. On request there were no hot water bottles or heaters, just an extra single duvet for a double bed. Shower and toilet rooms are very old and worn with doors that are difficult to close due to warping.
Great location and price was reasonable but a few silly things let down the experience - blown light bulbs in the bathrooms and toilets and the towels in the bathrooms were not very clean or dry particularly by the end of the day! The staff added to the experience of the motel although some were not very suited to their roles - a bit more friendly would make things more pleasant - but they weren't unpleasant either.
Good friendly staff in a very convenient and quite part of town. Very useful also that it is staffed 24/7 if you are getting in late, or early The basic breakfast included was also an additional bonus. I would stay there again.
The single room was old and smelt of mildew. The shower door in the communal bathroom did not close and water dripped on the floor.
A very basic establishment (probably could be considered as up market" back packers"), but reasonably priced and conveniently located. Our room faced towards the harbour and the traffic noise was loud and long.
This is a glorified back packers hostel. Its key advantage is that it is a quite location especially compared to the "backpackers" area. The accomodation is basic and dated.
Looks very dowdy from the outside and the colour scheme leaves a lot to be desired. However, the room was clean and comfortable, shower was excellent, situation was good and the complimentary breakfast was fine.
I found Aspen House a very pleasant quiet place to stay in. It is within walking distance of the harbour and the shops.
Good cheap Hotel, great breakfast and good value car parking.
Surprisingly "heavy" interior in grey and red in old converted warehouse! Good idea with basics for breakfast completed with bringings of own food. Mostly backpackers but wellfunctioning also for middleaged people who don´t want to spend lots of money on accomodation that is only needed for the night. Close to everything i Auckland.
The hotel was in walking distance to the Viaduct basin ( less 10 mins) and 5 mins to Britomart Railway and bus stateion. The down side was it was very noisy from outside street noise and road noise. We were on one side of the hotel and friends on the other and we all had very disturbed sleep. Breakfast is very budget with watered down juice and the slowest toaster you have ever met. Understandedly it i a budge pricing. The TV's in the room are very poor and tiny.
Facilities were clean enough. The included breakfast selections had small variety, but did provide enough to keep us from having to go out and buy our morning meal. Location was good for walking and we were easily able to get down to the nice waterfront area. We would stay at this location again.
