This hotel was quite suitable, extremely central, quiet, with very friendly & helpfull staff.Within walking distance from many places of interest.
The hotel is a little tired and run down but still good value given its location. It 's probably a good idea to have a look at the room your getting before checking in - there's are big difference in room sizes within the same room category. Traffic noise is pretty loud, especially on the lower floors, if this is going to be a problem for you then it might be worth asking for room that doesn't look over the street, although it means you'll have less light and less to look at out the window.

Hi Guys: I love reading these reviews they are usually accurate. Yes, this place has a smell to it. I think they use some chinese cleaner, but the location and building ROCK. There is a great restaurant across the street and the building is a coo, art deco building. The place needs to be updated, but if they did you would be paying triple the price. It is clean, The staff are helpful. They have internet access. I would stay there again!
The TV needs some improvement. The image was bad and 95% of the programmes were in Chinese. Otherwise, the room was clean & we enjoyed our stay there.
Lobby - beautiful. Rooms - need updating badly. And they smell bad/stale. Showers - temperature was either freezing or scalding. No ramp for wheeled luggage. On 2 occasions used taxis that were parked outside the hotel and was gouged by both of them (fake meters, fake "highway" unmetered costs) - hotel should be aware of this.
A good price for a very nice Arts Deco building and a great location
A major problem with the lack of hot water on 2 days of our 3 day stay. They advised us to run the water for 10 minutes to gain hot water and eventually sent a man to fiddle with the taps. Not really acceptable in a hotel of this kind. Helpful staff and good sized room, uninspired overpriced breakfast but plenty of chinese alternatives nearby.
Staff did not have very good English but attempted to be as helpful as they could. Great location off the Nanjing Road.
1930's Hotel , large rooms, very handy to the Bund and Nanjing street and we had free internet in our room, great dining room serving good chinese food. Good place for the average kiwi to stay in.
Good location but service wasnt so good
Complaints: The bathroom was not cleaned properly during our 5 night stay. To obtain hot water for the handbasin or shower, it was necessary to run the hot water tap for 15-30 minutes before use. My husband and I were charged 20 RMB each for a staff member to make one telephone call to confirm our airline bookings. Compliments: The art deco style of the hotel is very attractive. The coffee shop/lobby bar is a pleasant place to meet with friends. Our 3rd floor corner room gave us a fascinating view of the pedestrian and vehicle traffic below.
Very close to bund, walking steet and subway. Staff where helpful and able to communicate in English. The resturant needs to have more western dishes.
We really enjoyed very much being at the Metropole Hotel Shanghai.
A good midrange budget hotel. The bed was a bit hard but otherwise no complaints.
I had no special requirements to the hotel other than location. And it is just wonderful, right 3 minutes walk from the famous Bund and Nanjing Street. The reception girls speak English - a plus. The price for the one night stay in standard room is not high - a second plus. The linen is clean and towels are being changed every day - a third plus. It's just that I was not intended to stay at the hotel all the day long and for sleeping it suites perfectly.
Great location 2 blocks away from the Bund! Rooms were huge and had great value, staff were considerate and efficient!
Staff were very helpful, had a good command of English. It is a good 3 star hotel.
Location is close to the bund with a working distance, but outside the hotel surrounding is a little bit dark and quite, specially after office hour or at night. Need to walk quite a distance for outside meal or any sundry shopping. The staffs are very helpfull, especially the reception at the front desk. Room are clean. Room size is good. Goi S.
