The Powderhorn Chateau is a fantastic retreat for all seasons, and for those travelling between Auckland and Wellington or visiting the central plateau it provides the perfect stop-over. As the closest accommodation to Mount Ruapehu’s Turoa ski field it is hard to match the Powderhorn Chateau for its location and facilities. Positioned on the corner of the Ohakune junction, it becomes a hive of activity during the winter season and a relaxing retreat during the summer months. Our two restaurants, the Powderkeg and the Matterhorn, offer a high standard of dining, making use of local produce and a wide selection of quality New Zealand wines. The luxurious Matterhorn Restaurant and Bar offers intimate dining in sumptuous comfort and style. The Powderkeg Restaurant and Bar, or “The Keg” as it’s known locally, is one of the longest standing and best known venues in Ohakune; a favourite for après ski or for relaxing after a day in the outdoors.

Getting there:We are centrally located, just 4.5 hours drive from Auckland and 3.5 hours from Wellington. You can also catch the train, which stops 100 metres down the road from the Powderhorn Chateau. Once in Ohakune, the Powderhorn Chateau is easy to find; simply locate the i-SITE and take the road directly opposite here - this is Goldfinch Street. If coming from the south, turn right into Goldfinch Street, if coming from the north, turn left into Goldfinch Street. Travel 2.5 kilometres along Goldfinch Street and you will see us located on the right-hand side just before a low-level bridge.

We really enjoyed our stay at the Powderhorn. The indoor pool was lovely and we made use of the poolside bar. The bedroom was large and had all the facilities we needed. I will definitely encourage my friends to stay at the Powderhorn.
This place is awesome. First rate, but at the same time something a bit different. A beautiful establishment and we'll return for sure.
A great room, with lots of space, but unfortunately being made of wood, sound travels, which can hinder a good nights sleep. A wee way out from the main area of Ohakune for walking to other bars or restaurants. The indoor pool is absolutely wonderful and the PowderKeg bar has a lovely relaxed restaurant with excellent food, overall a really nice place.
I really enjoyed my stay at Powderhorn Chateau. The luxurious yet rustic surroundings appealed to all my senses. The staff was extremely kind and helpful. They booked all our local tours for us. The indoor heated pool was awesome. The rooms were large and spacious. I look forward to staying there again.
