This hotel is literally on top of the powell street Cable Car stop and is within walking distance of everything in Union Square. Room was on the smaller side, but had everything you would ever need!
I was in town for a conference and didn't want to stay at one of the official hotels, because they were expensive and charged extra for things like wi-fi. The Powell Hotel is by no means posh, but it had free internet, breakfast, and weekday happy hour (quite a surprise), and it's literally steps away from the BART station. It's just what I was looking for.
Due to my friends ilness I was alone for this trip to San Francisco but The Powell Hotel made my visit easy. I was able to check in early and the room though small was perfectly adequte with modern bathroom fittings. It's an older hotel and hallways were dated. Staff were friendly and very helpful, especially John at the front desk. The location is fabulous and the coffee and pastries breakfast along with the happy hour on the mezzanine floor gave me oppertunity to meet and chat with other guests. It's not a 5 star hotel but it is excellent value and a great launching pad for your San Francisco visit.
I had a difficult time finding a good value to stay in SF near Union Square and scoured all the web pages looking for a place with relatively good reviews. I had not stayed here before and my first several choices were all sold out. I wanted to find reasonable parking too although the parking here was no bargain. I was looking for an inclusive parking package to no avail. The Powell was however very decent, clean, comfortable and quiet. The street was not sketchy as is the case in some locations. It was directly in front of the cable car terminal and round table at the base of Powell and across the street from the higher priced Parc 55 Hotel. The staff was helpful and friendly and the rooms were very comfortable and contemporary. I would recommend this hotel and return myself.
The Powell Hotel is in one of the older San Francisco buildings and is located in the heart of "downtown." For those reasons, it is a comfortable stay but not outstanding in modern amenities or decor. (The elevator is slow, but the Internet is fast. The plumbing is old, but the television fare is up to date.) The Powell is also convenient to everything and everywhere. Just outside its doors is a cable car turnaround. Stops for city buses, streetcars, and rapid transit are just yards away on Market Street. And Union Square, the start of several tour buses, is only a couple blocks away.
We went there for 3 nights, in a renovated room (well, renovated, but 20 years ago...). The room was cold and noisy. The staff is not especially friendly or helpful.
Location was perfect. Right downtown and within walking distance from AT&T Stadium. Hotel was very nice and not cramped. This was much nicer than other places I have stayed in San Francisco. I will definitely think of this hotel for future trips.
Excellent location. So handy to the shops, Cable Car, Street Cars and Union Square. Great having a coffee machine but we would have liked an electric jug to make a cup of tea. Quiet room, good facilities and we eventually learned to use the tv remote! We will recommend this hotel and we will return again.
An old-style hotel given a facelift to accomodate modern facilities in hotel and in the bedrooms. However, to be expected, room size was rather small but adequate. Had a slight musty spell like damp carpets which was the case in our bedroom. Probably due to the rapid turnover in occupancy. Best thing of the hotel is its fabulous location - convenient to the underground trains, cable cars (trams) and the hop-off-hop-on sightseeing buses and plenty of eateries and great shops all around. If price continue to be reasonable, would certainly go back and also recommend to anyone going to San Francisco.
Excellent location and all in all good value. I had a late check out at 3:OO pm and this cost $70 which I thought a bit steep.
Great location and friendly staff.
What a fantastic location! Close to cable car (right at the door!), restaurants, shops, Union Square and more all within very easy walking distance. Staff were wonderful, very helpful and knowledgeable of the area. I would stay here again and recommend it to everyone.
The location of the Powell was perfect - right next to cable cars and BART, great shopping and restaurants. The staff was very helpful allowing us to check in early and out late as we had runners in the Nike run. I had a confirmed request for two twins. Since they had filled those available rooms they put us in a suite with two bedrooms, each with a queen and sharing one bath. The rooms were faced to the inside so we did not have all the cable car noise. We also had ceiling fans in each room. I felt the bathroom floor was a little dirty but I know old buildings are hard to clean. We enjoyed the visit.
The hotel was in an excellent location. However, our room on the second floor was very noisy with music being played in the building next to us until 9.00pm which was ok. However, it restarted at 1.30am until 4.30 am. Not ideal when you have spent all day travelling. When we told the front desk they just asked us to request a middle room next time we booked!!! So if you stay here make sure you request a middle floor room otherwise a lovely hotel.
The hotel location is excellent, hotel staff were very friendly and helpful. It's a hotel that I will go back to when I'm back in SF.
Hotel well placed and room comfortable. Towels fresh and clean every day. Only drawback - room was at top of mezzanine stairs and therefore could be very noisy early on with guests moving about. Air con fantastic.
The hotel's location, right at the Powell St. BART station and the Cable Car terminus, is its strongest point. Most convenient.
The best thing about this hotel is the location. We climbed the stairs from the Powell St BART station right to the front door of the hotel. Outsde the door was the terminus for the Powell-Hyde/Mason cable car, so we could check in the morning how big the queue was before we went out. The choice of restaurants and shopping in the area was great - check out Sears Fine Foods, Lefty O'Douls and Kuleto's for breakfast and dinner. The room itself was basic, but clean. The hotel is undergoing a refurbishment, and I'd be interested to see it when it's completed. Staff were very pleasant and helpful.
Decent hotel, affordable prices, great location, excellent access from/to the airport (BART station just in front)
The location is great. We were surprised when we found cute cable car at the front of the hotel. Very helpful service.
