"I've stayed at The Scarlet four times, over about 5 years. I have stayed in a variety of different rooms, but have learned that they are all tiny. Book the Executive size room or a Suite, if you want any room to move around. Some of the Premium/Deluxe rooms are 'inside', and have no windows. The design of the rooms is elaborate and plush - curtains puddle on the floor, bedding is huge, the headboard is soft/padded. There is a small hot tub, gym and a restaurant in the hotel. The location is great - near Chinatown, and lots of clubs nearby. " - Ian Knight
"We recently had a two day stop-over in Singapore at the Scarlet Hotel; a very clean and well located property. Our stay included their breakfast which is best described as a substantial brunch, combining an extensive buffet and cooked egg option. On our next visit to Singapore we will stay at the Scarlet if it is available, but we will book earlier to get a window room rather than a skylight room. A small price to pay for being in a remodeled row of historic shop-houses so close to a MRT station. " - David Rowbottam
"Central to Chinatown and spread across a terrace of old shopfronts. Aiming at the boutique small hotel market it majors on stylish furnishings, decor and hyper-fashionable presentation of quality food and hits each target at a fair price for an expensive town. One of Singapore's best street markets is across the road (a hundred stalls of ethnic food from across SE Asia at working stiff prices), temples, museums and MRT a stone's throw away - inside it's a photoshoot on a funky but chic tip. Basic rooms are compact (fine for one), step up and you are set for a week in style. Service is personable, stylish breakfasts a useful western alternative to going local all the time. The roof terrace is a popular local glitterati (or aspirant glitterati) hangout, and if generic luxury is passe this is a smart and worthwhile alternative. Don't expect a towering marble foyer, but for a funky, modern, nightclubby take on urban comfort you're home. Memorable and original. " - ian nicolson
