West Plaza Hotel Wellington Guest Reviews

4 out of 5

We (3 of us) were in Wellington for a conference and added a few days for touring. The drawbacks of the hotel - The room was small but was just enough for us (we had 3 single beds in our room). The walls to the rooms are not sound proof and you can hear what is going on in the next room, through the front door, and in the room above us. The closet was built at an angle which cut off more than half of the space to hang clothing and there were only 2 drawers for a room that is meant for 3 people. The elevators were small as well but efficient use of space seems to be the theme and we never had to wait for a seperate elevator to go to and from our room. They have a washer and dryer on the 5th floor that is available for use up to 10:30pm but you must get the key from the front desk and it took us 3 days to finally get it due to being put on a wait list. Laundry soap is available for purchase at the front desk. The washer fits a standard load of laundry but the dryer (on the highest setting) did not even dry my 'quick dry' clothes, leaving them damp. The great stuff - The hotel is centrally located within walking distance of the museum, shops, and a variety of places to eat. There is also a major pickup location for several tour companies directly across the street from the hotel. The Airport Flyer makes pickup and drops one street up from the hotel and cabs run frequently along the street and/or the front desk can call a cab for you (average cab fares for common runs are posted by the front desk). The hotel staff was very personable and friendly. The facilities were clean at all times and comfortable. You can purchase wireless internet access in the hotel or, if your roaming around, the city offers free hotspots (in 30 minute increments). The central location (a BIG plus), value for your money, and comfort of the hotel are definite draws for me to stay there again.

Will benefit greatly from the refurbishment planned. While room was clean and tidy stale smoke smell which is more than like still there from the days when smoking in the room was allowed. Was prepared to put up with it for one night and windows provided plenty of fresh air! Staff very welcoming and helpful and resturant food was very good.

great location. It has been a while since our room had been refurbished, but it had not reached the shabby stage.

Whilst we had a problem with the room the first night, which was suppose to be a twinshare and was a queen bed with the couch being the second bed, management changed the rooms for our 7 day stay. Ending up with a great room. But this was only at us pushing that we were not satisfied and that they needed to be more clear on what their twinshare rooms could end up being. Anyway turned out great in the end, as no way my daughter was going to share a bed with me!

The rooms have not been modernised since construction in the 70-80's and are a bit tired. The TV had a reasonable reception on only 3 chanels. We had dinner in the restaurant but 3 events occured which dissapointed: A breakfast menu was asked for to plan for the next day but never arrived. A group of very drunk and crudely shouting / swearing male diners were not controlled - but given even more alcohol. English Breakfast tea was served when Earl Grey was requested. Despite its location in central city, the hotel is quiet. The stay was satisfactory.

We stayed at the West Plaza hotel on a special deal which I consider was a fair price to pay for our room, The hotel is getting tired and could do with a freshen up.

The first room we were allocated smelt badly of smoke therefore we requested another room. The second room we were allocated was smaller had a definite musty smell in the bathroom. As we were only staying one night we didn't ask to be shift for a third time. The convenient car parking and the location of the Plaza is its redeeming feature and the reason we keep going back.

An excellent last minute choice in the centre of town, doesn't look so good from outside and no views to speak of but a light airy and well fitted room for myself and my mother.
