"The key to this hotel's 4-star rating is its personnel, like six front desk people when I checked in. A 5-star hotel that I stayed in a few days before had only two, and it was a larger hotel!! The Victory's eager, fresh faced, young staff was always delightful. The tree-lined streets in this older part of Guangzhou makes it charming and less hectic than other parts of this city. If the taxi doesn't give you a heart-attack on the way to this part of the city, you'll be in good shape. The taxi drivers here make the New York City cab drivers look like they're Driving Miss Daisy!! Shamian Island is generally protected from the thousands of these cabs.
