HOTEL 81 ORCHID SINGAPORE

"I stayed in the Gaylan(?) hotel. It is basic but adequate accommodation. The only wierd thing is that they wanted to charge me to have the telephone, (already in the room), connected so that I could make or receive calls (ok, only S$1). This is the only hotel in the world that I have stayed that has attempted to charge me for using a phone (other than the call costs of course). It is at least 10-15mins walk from the nearlest MTR station and I am a snappy walker! They also tried to round the contribution I had to pay the hotel directly, up to the nearest dollar. Naturally, on both counts I resisted with success. They just tried it on. ok to stay here, just keep your wits about you!" - Brian Jarvis

"Hotel is not actually near the centre but near the highway to the centre of town, but is located in the red light district of Singapore and has lines of prostitutes in front of it at night. Despite this it is reasonably clean, but the plastic-covered mattresses are not very inviting..." - Anonymous
