Last Minute Guide to Monaco

Diminutive in stature, big on tourism, Monaco is nonpareil. With more glitz and glam than you can shake a Hermès scarf at, the Riviera Principality is sublime.

The city-state is much more than billionaire playboys, frolicking heiresses and F1 drivers however. Monaco-Ville and indeed, parts of Monte Carlo, unfurl genuine charm, beautiful architecture and a veritable, worthwhile cultural landscape to explore. Of course, while here, it’s absolutely obligatory to window shop, stroll through the magnificent Casino and gape at the high-performance super-cars and luxury yachts in the marina.

Basics

Relatively moderate weather the entire year, the hallmark of the Mediterranean Côte d’Azur, is precisely what to expect in Monaco. The months of July and August, ever-popular for tourists, receive average temperatures in the 21 Celsius range. The months of May, June, September and October see temperatures hover between 10 and 20 Celsius. The rest of the year sees a dip to about 5.

The lesson is to pack for a variety of temperatures. By day the sun can be very hot on the Riviera coast but after sundown, it’s reasonable to expect chilly conditions. Remember too that many restaurants and certainly the world-famous Casino of Monte Carlo, enforce strict dress codes.

While the official language of Monaco is French, expect to hear plenty of Italian and English (and occasionally Monégasque).

Sights

The Palais Princier is the exquisite and historic home of the Prince of Monaco and House of Grimaldi. Watch the guard change and take a tour – this is perhaps the most popular tourist ritual in the city-state. Another landmark icon is the spectacular Saint Nicholas Cathedral, or Monaco Cathedral.

Monaco has a fair share of museums for such a small city-state, with the Musée Océanographique the unequivocal best. The Oceanographic Museum has a pristine collection of extraordinary fossils and the main aquarium is home to more than 4,000 types of fish. Jacques Cousteau was the director of the facility for years.

A thorough walk among the historic streets of Monaco-Ville is a must.

Shopping in Ville de Monaco

The superb Jardin Exotique de Monaco is a peerless cliff-side botanical garden with a natural cave system to explore. The complex also contains a Prehistoric Anthropology museum.

More Monaco Attractions

Monaco, Casino of Monte Carlo

The Grand Casino is the grand dame casino landmark on the planet. The vast casino resorts of Las Vegas and Macau may shine more brightly, but none can match the grandeur and elegance of Monte Carlo’s crown jewel. The casino’s Grand Théâtre de Monte Carlo is one of the best opera and ballet performance halls in Europe. Consult your hotel in Monaco for show times and ticket information.

The Formula One Grand Prix is the marquee event of the summer in Monaco. Euro elites and race fans from all over the world flock to the Principality to be part of the premier date on the annual F1 calendar.

Two streets serve window shoppers and the affluent well in Monaco: des Beaux Arts and de Monte Carlo. Swish designers like Prada, Gucci, Dior, Lacroix, Kenzo Cartier and Bulgari populate both.

La Condamine is a beautiful old district of Monaco with more affordable wares and souvenirs and by far the best views of the harbor (i.e. yachts galore).
