The gorgeous Indian city of Udaipur, also often referred to as the Venice of the East, is one of Rajasthani’s most incredible cities. The city is the largest in the area, with a population of over a half million, yet visitors describe Udaipur as having an atmosphere more like a small town.
The friendly people, moderate temperatures, and amazing architectural attractions are just the beginning when it comes to uncovering all that Udaipur has to offer.
When to Visit Udaipur
Udaipur experiences three seasons. They equate to a summer season from March to June, a monsoon season from July through September, and a winter season from October through mid-March. Although the landscapes around the area are gorgeous, the temperatures during the summer months range from 28.8 degrees to 38.3 degrees Celsius (84 to 101 degrees Fahrenheit), making that time of year very unpleasant for visitors.
Temperatures during the winter months are actually quite a bit more pleasant. Temperatures vary from 11.6 to 28.3 degrees Celsius (53 to 83 degrees Fahrenheit), making this the perfect time of year to visit some of Udaipur’s lakes and outside attractions. While this is the best time of year to visit, it is also the most expensive due to high levels of tourism.
Transportation throughout Udaipur
The city of Udaipur is relatively easy to navigate. There are dozens of small taxi services throughout the city, most of which are deemed safe. You will not find a bright collection of yellow and black taxi cabs like you are used to seeing in most other large cities. Taxi services range from economical to luxurious and it’s probably best to ask the concierge at your Udaipur hotel which services are best.
If you want to travel like a local you should consider a three-wheeler, tonga, or auto-rickshaw. They’re less expensive modes of transportation and you’ll do more to support the local economy. If you’d prefer a public transportation option, the bus service throughout Udaipur is relatively advanced as well.
Etiquette in Udaipur
When it comes to tipping in Udaipur, and throughout India, there are only a few points to remember. Taxi drivers do not usually receive tips but porters at your hotel, in airports, or in train stations should be tipped. Expect to tip them about 20 rupees (or about $0.45 USD). While you do not have to tip a taxi driver (unless you want to), you should tip any private drivers or tour guides you encounter. The average tip is around 200 rupees for the day ($4.50 USD) or 10% of the charge you paid for services. You should tip 10-20% of your bill in a restaurant but should check to make sure a tip was not automatically included on your bill first.
Proper etiquette when entering mosques or temples is important regardless of whether you are a local or tourist. Ask your hotel concierge to help you determine what dress code is required. Most require conservative dress, a covered head, and that you remove your shoes. As a tourist, you won’t be shunned if you do not follow the proper dress code but some locals may take offense so it is best to simply be respectful.
Speaking Hindi in Udaipur
When in Udaipur, you’ll likely come across several English speaking businessmen and tour guides. That’s great but if you really want to explore life like the locals you should learn at least a few Hindi phrases so that you can communicate with your hosts. They’ll appreciate your attempts to learn a few words of their language. Here are a few to get you started.
- NA-MA-STE (Hello or Goodbye)
- KRIPAYA (Please)
- DHAN-YA-VAD (Thank you)
- PA-A-NEE (Water)
- AAP SE MIL KE KHU-SHI HUI (It is nice to meet you)
- BATH-ROOM KID-HAR HAI (Where is the bathroom?)
- KYA SA-MAY HAI (What time is it?)
- KRIP-YA MUGH-HE HO-TEL LE CH-LI-YE (Take me to my hotel)
- MA-DAD (Help)
- YE KITNE KA HAI (How much is this?)
As you can see, learning a few Hindi phrases isn’t very difficult, especially if you can learn the phonetic pronunciations of a few words.
There are dozens of incredible attractions to keep you busy as you explore Udaipur, from historic sites to shipping galleries and art museums. Enjoy some local Indian cuisine, relax in your hotel, or enjoy the nightlife. It’ll be a trip you always remember!
